We built BottleneckDetector to respect your privacy. This page explains what data we collect, why, and how it is handled.

Overview
BottleneckDetector ("we", "our", "us") operates the BottleneckDetector website and bottleneck calculator tool. We take your privacy seriously. This Privacy Policy describes what information we collect when you visit our website, how we use it, and the choices you have regarding that information.
The short version: the bottleneck calculator itself runs entirely in your browser. When you select a CPU, GPU, resolution, or purpose, none of that information is sent to our servers. We do not know what hardware you are comparing. We do not store your calculations.
No account required. You can use every feature of BottleneckDetector without creating an account, providing your name, or sharing your email address.
What We Collect
Information you provide voluntarily
We only collect personal information you actively choose to provide. This currently happens in one context: if you contact us by email at [email protected], we will receive your email address and the contents of your message. We use this solely to respond to you and do not add you to any mailing list.
Information collected automatically
When you visit our website, our web hosting provider and server infrastructure may automatically log standard technical information including:
- IP address — used for server security, bot detection, and abuse prevention. Not linked to your identity or stored beyond standard server log retention periods.
- Browser type and version — used to identify and fix compatibility issues.
- Operating system — used to identify and fix compatibility issues.
- Referring URL — the page you came from before visiting our site, if applicable.
- Pages visited and time of visit — used to understand general traffic patterns and identify technical issues.
- Approximate geographic location — derived from IP address at country or region level only. Not precise.
This information is collected in aggregate and is not used to build a profile of individual users.
What we do NOT collect
- Which CPU or GPU you select in the calculator
- Your bottleneck calculation results
- Your name, address, or phone number
- Payment information of any kind (the tool is free)
- Social media profile information
- Device identifiers beyond standard browser information
Cookies and Tracking
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your browser. Our use of cookies is minimal.
Essential cookies
We may use essential session cookies for basic website functionality. These are temporary, deleted when you close your browser, and contain no personal information.
Analytics
We may use a privacy-respecting analytics service to understand which pages are most visited and how users navigate the site. Any analytics we use is configured to anonymise IP addresses, respect Do Not Track browser settings, and not share data with advertising networks. We do not use Google Analytics in its standard tracking configuration.
Advertising cookies
We do not run advertising on BottleneckDetector. We do not use advertising cookies, retargeting pixels, or any tracking technology associated with ad networks.
Managing cookies
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to refuse cookies, delete existing cookies, or be notified when a cookie is set. Disabling cookies will not affect your ability to use the bottleneck calculator, as it functions entirely in-browser without requiring any cookies.
How We Use Your Information
We use the limited information we collect for the following purposes only:
- Operating the website — ensuring the site loads correctly, diagnosing server errors, and maintaining performance.
- Improving the tool — understanding which features are most used helps us decide where to focus development effort.
- Security — identifying and blocking malicious traffic, bot attacks, and abuse of our infrastructure.
- Responding to enquiries — if you email us, we use your email address to reply.
We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or selling to third parties under any circumstances.
Third-Party Services
We use a small number of third-party services to operate the website. Each is listed here with the reason we use it:
Web hosting and CDN
Our website is hosted on a third-party hosting provider. Standard server logs (IP addresses, page requests, timestamps) are retained by the hosting provider in accordance with their own privacy policy. We select hosting providers with strong privacy practices and data protection commitments.
Google Fonts
We load the Inter typeface from Google Fonts to ensure consistent typography across devices. When your browser loads our page, it makes a request to Google's servers to download the font file. Google may log this request as part of their standard infrastructure logging. We have no control over Google's data practices; you can review their privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy. If you prefer not to load external fonts, you can block Google Fonts requests in your browser — the site will fall back to system fonts and remain fully functional.
No social media trackers
We do not embed Facebook Pixel, Twitter/X tracking scripts, LinkedIn Insight Tag, TikTok Pixel, or any other social media tracking code on our website.
No affiliate tracking
We do not use affiliate links or affiliate tracking cookies. We have no financial relationship with CPU or GPU manufacturers, retailers, or resellers.
Data Retention
Server logs containing IP addresses and technical access information are retained for a maximum of 90 days for security purposes, after which they are automatically deleted.
Email correspondence is retained for as long as needed to resolve your enquiry and for a reasonable period afterward in case of follow-up. We do not retain email correspondence indefinitely.
We do not retain any data related to your use of the bottleneck calculator, because we do not collect it in the first place.
Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights regarding your personal data under applicable privacy laws such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe, the UK Data Protection Act, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), or similar legislation in your jurisdiction.
These rights may include:
- Right of access — you can request a copy of any personal data we hold about you.
- Right to rectification — you can request that inaccurate personal data be corrected.
- Right to erasure — you can request that we delete your personal data, subject to any legal obligations we have to retain it.
- Right to restrict processing — you can ask us to limit how we use your personal data in certain circumstances.
- Right to data portability — where applicable, you can request your data in a machine-readable format.
- Right to object — you can object to the processing of your personal data in certain circumstances.
- Right to withdraw consent — where we rely on consent as the legal basis for processing, you can withdraw it at any time.
Given the minimal data we collect, most of these rights will be straightforward to exercise. To make a request, contact us at [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.
California residents (CCPA)
California residents have the right to know what personal information we collect, the right to delete personal information, and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information. To exercise your rights, contact [email protected].
Children's Privacy
BottleneckDetector is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at [email protected] and we will delete it promptly.
Users in the European Economic Area under the age of 16 should use the site with the involvement of a parent or guardian.
Security
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect any information we hold against unauthorised access, loss, or misuse. Our website is served over HTTPS (TLS encryption) to protect data in transit between your browser and our servers.
However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. While we do our best to protect your information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. If you have reason to believe that your interaction with us is no longer secure, please contact us immediately.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
We encourage you to review this page periodically. Your continued use of BottleneckDetector after any changes to this policy constitutes your acceptance of those changes. If the changes are material, we will make reasonable efforts to notify users.
